Nortel Business Communications Manager, BCM 200/400/50
The Business Communications Manager (BCM) from Nortel is an all-in-one platform for the converged voice and data needs of small to medium sized business customers. It is distinctive in providing a choice of IP-enabled or pure IP strategies with simultaneous support for IP and traditional business sets and smooth migration from one to the other.
In common with the current industry practice almost all the software packages are enabled by "keycodes" according to the software build specified at time of purchase or as cost additions later on. A large number of applications are available to suit many different telephony and data options.
BCM has been designed to include features that until very recently have only been cost effective on much larger and much more expensive installations.
It has been specially designed to include the following options.
- Voicemail
- Fax and Unified messaging
- Interactive voice
- CTI / TAPI
- Data access products
- Internet access (Proxy Server etc)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
- IP firewall
- IP Telephony
- Voice Over IP
- Basic Call Centre
- Redundant Power and Redundant Hard-drive
The Product
BCM is a Linux based product targeted at the small or medium business environment. It is ideal for businesses from 3 to 200 stations with advanced capabilities, such as robust telephone features, voice messaging and unified messaging, IP networking, Internet / intranet access, contact centres with skills based routing, IP telephony to users desktops and an integrated router option for Ethernet or ADSL broadband access.
BCM can be positioned as a telephony only product and as such it performs excellently, however, this would be under positioning the products capabilities. It is better positioned when in a fully integrated data / voice environment.
All programming carried out on the BCM is done using a graphical web based application programme. This single management interface gives the customer access to the applications running on the BCM for performing tasks such as shift changes, recording announcements and changes to the unified messaging set-up.
Voicemail
The BCM Product range provides voicemail and auto-attendant as standard. In a traditional telephone system Voicemail interfaces with the main system are quoted in ports i.e. "2 ports 24 mailboxes". This can cause issues with heavy use of Auto Attendant where the Voicemail system gives engaged or ringtone when it is overloaded. BCM has up to 10 ports for use with Voicemail and other applications. Storage time for messages depends on number and types of message stored but is typically around 100 hours.
